The Armed Forces of the Philippines is learning the likelihood of attacking mosques which were transformed into enemy strongholds by ISIS-linked Maute associates in Marawi City.

AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr. on Monday stated that some worldwide regulations would permit assault on locations of worship. Nevertheless, he pressured that AFP chief of employees Gen. Eduardo Año requested the troopers to prevent this kind of assault.

“There are provisions that may permit for us to consider motion towards them… Pinag-aaralan naming mabuti. Hindi ko sasabihing titirahin pero pinag-aralan namin mabuti, kasi may kautusan si chief of employees that we are going to steer clear of performing that around feasible,” he stated following the Mindanao Hour in Malacañang.

“May exemption. Maski sinong tao na armado na nag-harbor sa isang lugar, maging ospital guy ito o locations of worship, kung sila nagpupumilit at manatili doon, may provision doon internationally na pwede silang gamitan ng karahasan,” he additional.

The government formerly exposed the Maute fighters who attacked Marawi City on May 23 utilized people as shields and turned madrasahs into staging locations and mosques into sniper nests.

The Geneva Conventions prohibit any act of hostility towards locations of worship and cultural qualities and objects.

In accordance towards the AFP Standing Guidelines of Engagement, “cultural, spiritual and historic landmarks, civilian populace facilities, community utilities as well as other non-military constructions, shall be guarded and shall not be attacked besides once they are utilized for army functions.”

AFP to Maute: Surrender

Throughout the briefing, Padilla requested the Maute to surrender to totally steer clear of attacking mosques in Marawi City.

“Kaya nga po pasensyoso nating pinapaabot ang ating panawagan, maski magmukha na po tayong sirang plaka, na sila ay magbaba ng armas at sumuko dahil sa iyong pagkakataong sinasabi mo ay ayaw nating mangyari,” he stated.
